This is a booze recipe. I know there’s nothing special about this cocktail that makes it particularly or especially Vegan (with a capital V), but, hey, let’s be honest, a good portion of my vegan diet happens to be in the liquid form.
I first had this drink a few years ago at a bar near my place called Raines Law Room. It’s one of those bars that is very popular in New York City: underground speakeasies with no sign, where there are no bartenders but instead “mixologists”, and these mixologists are 95% more likely to have a handlebar mustache than most New Yorkers.
I asked for “something with gin”, and they whipped this up for me, and since the day I first tried this, I’ve been hooked. (Not in an alcoholic sort of way, no intervention needed, I swear.) I managed to find the recipe and now make it at home. It has so many complex flavors, and the sweetness of the chocolate offsets the sour lemon so perfectly. If you make this for your guests, they will be very impressed, and you may start to consider how you might look with a handlebar mustache.
